Material Engineering College Analyzed Subject Construction in the manner of Peeling Onions during the Vacation

On February 9, on an early spring morning, snow was falling outside the windows, but in meeting room 1612 of Administrative Building, Material Engineering College was crammed with vice deans, heads of departments and dozens of academic backbone members to have a meeting on subject construction of new semester and construction and development of material science and engineering as the first-class subject.

Dean Yu Zhishui vividly analyzed, in the way of peeling onions, our school’s material science and engineering as the first-class subject and each second-class subject as well as the basics of their research directions. From national level and from the angle of practical industrial demands and development situation and framework, he analyzed the connection between the first-class subject and critical industry development in our country and in Shanghai as well. He used welding as an example to deeply analyze technological development framework of such fields as Automobile, Aviation, Marine Engineering, Shipping, Nuclear and Half-Transmission, hence leading out the theory framework for breakthrough in future subject development, and according to requirements of the third round of subject evaluation index system, compared the college’s situation with the same role-model subjects in other universities of China, pointing out that our school’s material science and engineering subject, in aspects of crucial industry technology and high-level fundamental research, requires new research, new field, new technology and new theory. The team members present at the meeting had a deep discussion related to their own research directions of present analysis, development goal and subject construction map, reached a mutual understanding over subject construction of “subject, research and talent development integrated” and development notion, made great efforts to grasp the opportunity of high-peak subject construction, laid out subject development plan, made a scientific map of subject construction and development, and endeavored to make our school’s material science and engineering subject gain a breakthrough in the whole level of technological innovation and knowledge service in the next three to five years.

Chen Sihao, Director of Science and Research Department, Wang Dazhong, Liu Zhixin, Vice Directors and Zhang Chaomin, Vice Dean of Fundamental Studies College were invited to attend the meeting.

   Material Engineering College used effectively the vacation time to take an overall observation and pinpoint the development direction, implementing with practical actions the school’s strategy of “innovative drive, transited development”, promoting the upgrade of “three coordination patterns”, expanding in an overall way the contents of “one year three semesters five stages”, making vacation become a period for the “charging” of teaching and research work.
