Founded in Shanghai’s reform era, SUES was created to serve industry and continues to grow with it.

As one of China’s pioneers in applied innovation education, SUES integrates engineering excellence, managerial insight, and design imagination to turn ideas into real-world impact.

Recognized as a pilot university in the National Excellent Engineer Education Program and a High-Level Applied University of Shanghai, SUES is building a world-class institution distinguished by its industrial character and international outlook.

Built on a Legacy of Making

Our story began in 1978 with the Electromechanical Branch of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the East China Institute of Textile Technology.

These merged in 1985 to form Shanghai University of Engineering Science.

In 2003, the historic Shanghai Advanced Technical School (founded 1951) joined SUES, enriching our foundation in engineering craft and hands-on learning.

Three Engines of Innovation, One Direction

At SUES, education moves through three engines—Engineering, Management, and Design—aligned toward one direction: Applied Innovation.

This model drives our response to the AI revolution and the global transition toward sustainable development.

From intelligent manufacturing to green mobility and creative industries, SUES blends research, practice, and entrepreneurship to link talent, technology, and transformation.

Our programs form an ecosystem where industry, innovation, talent, and entrepreneurship reinforce one another.

Nineteen colleges offer:

•1 doctoral program • 15 academic master’s • 12 professional master’s • 64 undergraduate majors.

Many are nationally recognized: 13 as National First-Class Programs, 19 as Shanghai First-Class Programs, with international accreditations from China Engineering Education, ASIIN (Germany), and AABI (USA).

Five disciplines—Design, Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration, Statistics, and Marxist Theory—rank among China’s best.

People Who Shape Progress

SUES welcomes about 25,400 students, including 5,600 graduates, taught and mentored by more than 2,000 faculty and staff.

Among them are 25 national experts and 130 provincial and municipal awardees.

Our scholars rank among the world’s top 2 % for scientific impact (Stanford–Elsevier 2025).

Graduates earn a reputation for professionalism, creativity, and industry readiness that makes them highly sought after worldwide.

Research that Moves Industry Forward

Innovation is built into our DNA.

SUES leads major national projects including AI 2030, National Natural Science Foundation grants, and social science initiatives.

We operate 21 provincial research platforms, hold 1,200 + invention patents, and have converted over 300 technological breakthroughs into commercial value through licensing, transfer, and equity participation.

Collaborating Across Borders

SUES partners with 120 + universities and institutions in over 30 countries.

Through the International Institute of Creative Design and numerous joint programs, students pursue dual degrees, research exchanges, and global internships.

Each year about 1,000 international students from 90 countries join our campuses, strengthening Shanghai’s role as a hub for global innovation and the Belt and Road Education Initiative.

A City that Becomes a Campus

Across our three campuses — Songjiang (Main), Changning, and Hongkou — SUES creates spaces where learning and city life intertwine.

National teaching centers, virtual simulation labs, and our University Science Park anchor a “Global Knowledge Economy Circle,” linking campus to community and enterprise.

Here, students learn by creating, and Shanghai itself becomes an open laboratory for innovation.
