Shanghai University of Engineering Science is a full-time comprehensive university primarily characterized by the interdisciplinary integration of its “3-wings” framework (engineering, management, and design). It promotes coordinated development through the interconnected interplay of multiple disciplines, including art, law, science, medicine, economics, and literature, etc. SUES is one of the first batches of pilot universities under the Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Program of Ministry of Education, the pioneer of Emerging Engineering Education and High-level Application-oriented Universities in Shanghai. In 2024, SUES was approved as a doctoral degree-awarding university and granted the authority to confer doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline of Mechanical Engineering.

 

The predecessor of SUES can be traced back to the establishment of the Mechanical and Electrical Branch of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1978 (including the incorporation of the Branch of East China Institute of Chemical Technology in 1984) and the Branch of East China Textile Engineering Institute. In 1985, with the approval of Ministry of Education, Shanghai University of Engineering Science was formally established on the basis of the Mechanical and Electrical Branch of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Branch of East China Textile Engineering Institute. In 2003, with the approval of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, Shanghai Technician School (founded in 1951) was integrated into Shanghai University of Engineering Science as a whole.

 

The three campuses of SUES, Songjiang, Changning, and Hongkou, cover nearly 100 hectares, with a total construction area of 728,000 square meters. The total fixed assets amount to approximately 3.641 billion yuan, while the teaching and research instruments are valued at about 1.328 billion yuan. SUES has established the following schools/colleges: School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, School of Management Studies, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Art and Design, International Institute of Creative Design, School of Air Transportation (School of Flying), School of Textiles and Fashion, School of Urban Railway Transportation, School of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics, School of Foreign Languages, School of Marxism, College of International Education, College of Continuing Education, Higher Vocational and Technical College, Department of Physical Education, Engineering Training Center, General Education Center, as well as the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center and National University Science Park.

 

SUES has established a comprehensive talent cultivation system, covering undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. It currently holds one first-level doctoral degree authorization point, 15 first-level master’s degree authorization points, 12 authorization points for professional degrees, and 64 undergraduate programs. There are 13 programs of SUES selected as the national first-class undergraduate major construction sites: Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Information Management and Information System, Business Administration, Marketing, Tourism Management, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Product Design, Fashion Design and Engineering, and Transportation. There are 19 programs of SUES selected as the first-class undergraduate major construction sites in Shanghai: Automotive Service Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Radio and Television Engineering, Automation, Engineering Management, Labor and Social Security, Polymer Materials and Engineering, Materials Forming and Control Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Visual Communication Design, Art and Technology, Traffic Management, Logistics Management, Flight Technology, Aircraft Manufacturing Engineering, Textile Engineering, Railway Traffic Signal and Control, Railway Engineering. There are 11 programs have been certified in China Engineering Education: Pharmaceutical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation, Fashion Design and Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Computer Science and Technology, Vehicle Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Materials and Engineering. The 4 programs of Vehicle Engineering, Railway Traffic Signal and Control, Railway Engineering and Energy and Power Engineering passed ASIIN accreditation, while the 2 programs of Traffic Management and Aircraft Manufacturing Engineering passed AABI accreditation. 

 

SUES adheres to the educational mission of “founding itself on modern industries and dedicating itself to serving economic and social development”. Guided by the needs of modern industrial development, it integrates the industrial chain, innovation chain, specialty chain, and talent chain. Leveraging industry-university-research strategic alliances as a platform, it strengthens its talent cultivation model centered on “collaborative curriculum development, joint platform construction, and industry-education integrated training”. This approach promotes the interdisciplinary integration of its “3-wings” framework (engineering, management, and design), fostering a talent cultivation ecosystem that links knowledge with practice, shares platforms and resources, and facilitates mutual advancement in nurturing diverse types of talents—ultimately building a cradle for modern engineering and management innovators. Currently, SUES has approximately 25,400 full-time enrolled students, including near 5,600 postgraduates. SUES graduates have a significant competitive advantage in employment and are generally welcomed by employers.

 

SUES continues to advance the reform of its research management system, deepen the integration of science, education, and industry, and enhance its core research and innovation capabilities. Since the year of 2020, SUES has been approved for several major national projects, including Ministry of Science and Technology’s 2030 Scientific Innovation—New Generation Artificial Intelligence project, the National Social Science Fund’s major project on the study of the spirit of the 19th CPC Central Committee’s Sixth Plenary Session, a major project entrusted by Ministry of Education’s Philosophy and Social Sciences Research, as well as key projects under National Natural Science Foundation, National Social Science Foundation, and National Social Science Fund’s key projects, and others. In total, 207 national-level projects have been approved, including 143 National Natural Science Foundation projects and 54 National Social Science Fund projects. SUES has also received 40 scientific research awards at provincial and ministerial-level or above, including 6 first prizes at the provincial and ministerial levels. In the seventh edition of the Annual Global Top 2% Scientists List published by Stanford University and Elsevier, 8 of SUES’ scholars were included in the Lifetime Scientific Impact Ranking, and 16 scholars were listed in the 2024 Scientific Impact Ranking. SUES places great emphasis on platform development and diverse collaborations. It currently hosts 21 provincial and ministerial-level platforms, including collaborative innovation centers, public service platforms for research and development, engineering technology research centers, government decision-making consulting research bases, and Think Tanks. SUES’ science and technology projects are progressing rapidly, and the quality of intellectual property is accelerating. Since 2020, it has been granted 1,294 invention patents and has successfully transferred and commercialized near 300 projects through methods such as patent licensing, patent transfers, and technology achievements converted into equity.

 

SUES places a significant focus on developing high-quality and high-level talents. There are over 2000 faculty and staff members, including more than 1500 teachers engaged in teaching and research, among whom over 60% hold doctoral degrees. SUES currently has 25 national talents of all kinds in the post. More than 130 individuals have been approved for talent projects at the provincial and ministerial levels as well as various talent programs in Shanghai. There are 9 experts who receive special government allowance from the State Council.

 

Adhering to the concept of globalized education, SUES actively introduces international quality educational resources to improve its internal construction and student training. So far, SUES have established cooperative relations with more than 120 universities or institutions in more than 30 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, and Pakistan, etc. SUES has established a non-independent legal entity for Sino-foreign cooperative education, the International Institute of Creative Design, as well as a Sino-Swiss cooperative education program. SUES offer more than 120 overseas (including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) study and exchange programs for students, including joint doctoral training, dual master’s degrees, bachelor’s and master’s degrees, dual bachelor’s degrees, credit recognition, graduation projects, overseas internships, international industry-university collaboration, summer and winter schools, and sister city programs, etc., so as to provide students a variety of platforms for overseas (including Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) study and exchange. SUES actively serves the national One Belt and One Road Initiative, actively carries out educational cooperation and exchange with universities along the route, and receives international students from more than 90 countries and regions to study for degrees, participate in short-term exchanges, and receive language training.

 

Along with higher education reform and development, SUES further consolidates the orientations of “serving science and technology, cultivating talents for industries” and “prioritizing service, strengthening contributions”, working to accelerate the establishment of a world-class application-innovation-oriented with distinct industrial features. This pursuit aims to continuously supply technological innovation and industrial development with high-quality, interdisciplinary, and international engineering and technical talents, as well as intellectual support.
