Shanghai University of Engineering Science (SUES) is a full-time comprehensive university with a strong emphasis on engineering, distinctive features in management and arts, and the coordinated development of various disciplines including engineering, management, arts, law, science, medicine, economics, and literature. SUES is one of the first batches of pilot universities under the Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Program of Ministry of Education, the pioneer of Emerging Engineering Education and High-level Application-oriented Universities in Shanghai. Since 2017, SUES has been applying to be a doctoral degree-awarding institution in Shanghai.

The predecessor of SUES can be traced back to the establishment of the Mechanical and Electrical Branch of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1978 (including the incorporation of the Branch of East China Institute of Chemical Technology in 1984) and the Branch of East China Textile Engineering Institute. In 1985, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Shanghai University of Engineering Science was formally established on the basis of the Mechanical and Electrical Branch of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Branch of East China Textile Engineering Institute. In 2003, with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, Shanghai Technician School (founded in 1951) was integrated into Shanghai University of Engineering Science as a whole.

The three campuses of SUES, Songjiang, Changning, and Hongkou, cover nearly 87.2 hectares, with a total construction area of 739,000 square meters. The total fixed assets amount to approximately 3.349 billion yuan, and the teaching and research instruments are valued at about 1.118 billion yuan. SUES has established the following schools/colleges: School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, School of Management Studies, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Art and Design, International Institute of Creative Design, School of Air Transportation (School of Flying), School of Textiles and Fashion, School of Urban Railway Transportation, School of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics, School of Foreign Languages, School of Marxism, College of International Education, College of Continuing Education, Higher Vocational and Technical College, Department of Physical Education, Engineering Training Center, General Education Center, as well as the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center and National University Science Park.

There are currently 13 master’s degree programs for first-level disciplines, 8 professional master’s degree programs, and 63 undergraduate programs at SUES. There are 13 programs of SUES selected as the national first-class undergraduate program construction sites: Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Information Management and Information System, Business Administration, Tourism Management, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Product Design, Fashion Design and Engineering, and Transportation. There are 19 programs of SUES selected as the first-class undergraduate program construction sites in Shanghai: Automotive Service Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automation, Radio and Television Engineering, Automation, Engineering Management, Labor and Social Security, Polymer Materials and Engineering, Materials Forming and Control Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Visual Communication Design, Art and Technology, Traffic Management, Logistics Management, Flight Technology, Aircraft Manufacturing Engineering, Textile Engineering, Railway Traffic Signal and Control, Railway Engineering. There are 11 programs have been certified in engineering education: Pharmaceutical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Transportation, Fashion Design and Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, Computer Science and Technology, Vehicle Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Materials and Engineering. Automotive Engineering program, Railway Traffic Signal and Control program, Railway Engineering program and Energy and Power Engineering program passed ASIIN accreditation, Traffic Management program and Aircraft Manufacturing Engineering program passed AABI accreditation.

SUES is dedicated to advancing education and teaching reform and fostering talent development. SUES adheres to the tenet of being based on modern industry, serving the socioeconomic development and modern industrial development needs. Taking the Industry-University-Research strategic alliance as the platform, SUES have built the Three Collaboratives mode: collaborative education, collaborative cultivation and collaborative innovation, helping the University become the cradle of training excellent engineers and engineering service talents. The University homes nearly 24,000 full-time students, including about 4700 postgraduate students. SUES graduates have a significant competitive advantage in employment and are generally welcomed by employers.

SUES adheres to discipline guidance and continuously enhances the core innovation of scientific research. Its Engineering discipline, Materials Science discipline, and Chemistry discipline entered the top 1% of ESI in the world. It operates one Shanghai III peak discipline, one IV peak discipline, and 21 provincial-level scientific research platforms such as the Collaborative Innovation Center, R&D Public Service Platform, Engineering Technology Research Center, Government Decision-Making Consultation and Research Base and SUES Think Tank. Since 2018, SUES have won 158 National Natural Science Fund projects as the first organization, among them, participated in 1 Key project of the Joint Fund; In 2020, SUES was awarded the major project of Ministry of Science and Technology Science and Technology Innovation 2030 - New Generation Artificial Intelligence; 52 projects of the National Social Science Foundation were approved as the first organization, including 3 key projects of the National Social Science Foundation, 1 major project of the National Social Science Foundation, 2 projects of the National Arts Foundation, and more than 500 projects at provincial and ministerial levels; 46 science and technology awards at provincial and ministerial levels as the first organization, including 7 first prize; 12 awards in philosophy and society at provincial and ministerial levels, including 2 first prize; and more than 3,500 patents.

SUES places a significant focus on developing high-quality and high-level talents. There are 2000 faculty and staff members, including more than 1500 teachers engaged in teaching and research, among whom 60% hold doctoral degrees. SUES currently has 25 national talents of all kinds in the post. More than 140 individuals have been approved for talent projects at the provincial and ministerial levels as well as various talent programs in Shanghai, 9 experts who receive special government allowance from the State Council.

Adhering to the concept of globalized education, SUES actively introduces international quality educational resources to improve its internal construction and student training. So far, SUES have established cooperative relations with more than 110 universities or institutions in more than 20 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, and Pakistan. SUES has been given permission to manage a Sino-foreign cooperative organization, the International Institute of Creative Design. There are Sino-Korean, Sino-French, and Sino-Swiss cooperative education programs, providing more than 110 overseas study and exchange programs, including joint doctoral training, dual master’s degrees, bachelor’s and master’s degrees, dual bachelor’s degrees, credit recognition, graduation projects, overseas internships, online courses, and international industry-university collaboration, in order to provide students a variety of platforms for international study and exchange. SUES actively serves the national One Belt and One Road Initiative, actively carries out educational cooperation and exchange with universities along the route, and receives international students from more than 70 countries and regions to study for degrees, participate in short-term exchanges, and receive language training.

Along with higher education reform and development, we vigorously implement the three development strategies: strengthening the university with talents, developing with characteristics, and internationalization; we take root in China, cultivate high-quality engineering application-oriented talents who are responsible for national rejuvenation, and advance confidently on the journey of building a high-level modern engineering application-oriented university.
