Shanghai Ultra Intense Laser Intelligent Processing Technology and Equipment Research and Development Center Unveiled

 On May, 14, the trust board enlarged meeting of Shanghai Ultra Intense Laser Processing Alliance of Industrial Production, Teaching and Research and Application Demonstration Base (hereinafter referred to as Base) and the 1^st session of Shanghai High Strength Laser Intelligent Processing Equipment Key Technology Development Center of Industrial Production, Teaching and Research (hereinafter referred to as Center) was formally held in the No.3 Lecture Hall of SUES Information Center.

The participants included Zhang Jie, president of Shanghai Jiaotong University and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lu Jing, vice chief of Shanghai Education Committee, Fu Xinghua, vice chief of Shanghai Economy and Informatization Committee, Teng Jianyong, SUES party secretary, SUES president Ding Xiaodong, SUES vice president Chen Weiming, SUES vice president Shi Jianyong, Zhang Ying, chief of Scientific Advancement Department of  Shanghai Economy and Informatization Committee, Cang Ping, vice chief of Scientific Department of Shanghai Education Committee, and all the trustees of the Center as well as the people in charge in relevant administrative departments of SUES, and SUES faculty members and working staff. The meeting was presided over by SUES vice president Chen Weiming.

Last March, the Base was established under the generous support of Zhang Jie, president of Shanghai Jiaotong University in order to revitalize Shanghai’s leading position in laser processing and application and facilitate the upgrading of the laser processing industry. To aid the construction of the alliance of industrial production, teaching and research, SUES submitted the proposal to build the Center to Shanghai Education Committee according to the spirit of “Implementation Plan of Knowledge Service Capability Improvement Project among Shanghai Universities” and based on the trend of following the upgrading of advanced equipment manufacturing proposed by Shanghai Committee of Economy and Information, and on the requirement of developing advanced and intelligent manufacturing equipment in Shanghai. The submitted proposal won approval for construction in September, 2013.

At the beginning of the meeting, Ding Xiaodong acknowledged his heartfelt gratitude and welcome to all the leaders and experts attending the conference. Ding pointed out that the establishment and future development of the Center is closely related to the support of all trustees. Lu Jing, vice chief of Shanghai Education Committee spoke highly of SUES’s achievements in knowledge service platform and hoped that SUES could explore a new model of the knowledge service platform of local universities serving the local economy and society so as to spur the development of university courses and score greater achievements in engineering education and talent cultivation. Fu Xinghua, vice chief of Shanghai Economy and Informatization Committee indicated that the establishment of the Alliance and the Center will promote the research and development of ultra intense laser processing in Shanghai and also in the whole country. He sincerely hoped that strenuous efforts can be made to develop the theoretical research of laser equipment, and practical research can be made into the relevant equipment and process, and moreover be promoted. Besides, it was also his wish that the establishment of the Base and the improvement of its mechanism can greatly speed up and facilitate the close integration of industrial requirements and process research.  

At the meeting, Lu Jing, vice chief of Shanghai Education Committee and SUES party secretary Teng Jianyong jointly unveiled the alliance’s base in SUES and the Center. After the unveiling ceremony, Lu Jing awarded the certificate of engagement to Zhang Jie, academician and chairman of Trust Board, who, in turn, issued certificates of engagement to vice chairman of Trust Board, chiefs, and vice chiefs and trust board members.

After the opening ceremony, the trust board members conducted an in-depth exchange on the research, development and application of high strength laser intelligent processing equipment based on the demands of their respective fields. First, Prof. Xu Jianqiu from Shanghai Jiaotong University introduced the development of the alliance and its future planning and the status quo of the research on laser impact strengthening in the Center. The work of the Alliance mainly centers on the cooperation among industrial production, teaching and research and talent training. In the meantime, the Alliance has made a major breakthrough in speeding up the approval of key national projects. It was hoped that constant efforts can be made to expedite the development of relevant laser equipment in Shanghai.

SUES Prof. Yu Zhishui introduced the objective of the Center and the progress of integration of industrial production, teaching and research.  After the founding of the Center and under the guidance of mechanism of in-depth integration of industrial production, teaching and research, the Center will be strategically targeted at high strength laser shock processing, intelligent surface modification, intelligent flexible welding and intelligent three-dimensional cutting, and will strive to make breakthroughs in high strength laser machining precision, automation and flexibility. Prof. Yu also indicated that the development of the Center will be closely related to the goal of development, strategic planning and the main tasks of the Alliance; give full play to the Center’s advantage in concentration of talents, excited vitality and funding support, and focus on building the center into an open, service-oriented and innovative platform with remarkable characteristics of in-depth integration of industrial production, teaching and research of the Alliance

All trustees were actively involved in making speeches and discussions, proposing ideas and suggestions for the future development of the Center. Ye Jian, a trustee of Director of Shanghai Mechanical Manufacturing Process Research Institute, indicated that it was a great honor for his institute to be a member of the trust board and his institute would make its due contribution as a backstage hero by achieving an organic integration of industrial production, teaching and research to promote the application of the laser industry. Lu Jingwen, a trustee of General Manager of Shanghai Unity Prima Laser Equipment Co., Ltd. pointed out the huge demand for laser processing in the fields of aviation, aerospace, military equipment manufacturing, shipbuilding, and automobile. The establishment of the Center offers a favorable platform for all to take advantage of each other’s resources to solve the practical problems in the industry, thus creating a good reputation for Shanghai’s high-end laser manufacturing technology. Gu Changshi, a trustee of Vice Chief of Shanghai Shipbuilding Technology Research Institute pointed out that intelligent laser processing, an organic combination of laser, intelligent processing, and robots, is still underdeveloped in China in terms of production efficiency and management expertise as compared with the international level. Laser processing can lower the cost while enhancing the efficiency, which also meets the trend of energy saving and emission reduction.  By virtue of the platform consisting of both the Alliance and the Center, universities, research institutes and enterprises are bound to score greater accomplishments. Guo Lijie, a trustee of Vice Director of Shanghai Aviation Equipment Manufacturing Plant introduced the application of laser technology in the field of aviation, pointing out that there are broad prospects for its application in aviation and military weaponry and hoping that more in-depth collaboration of industrial production, teaching and research can be conducted on the basis of the construction of the Center and present project research. SUES Prof. Zhang Guangjun, another trustee, indicated it is no easy to set up such a platform for exchange and cooperation with the participation of so many enterprises as the trustees of the Center, and he hoped that he will strive for the brilliant goals of the Alliance and the Center.

    In the end, Zhang Jie, Chairman of the Trust Board of both the Alliance and the Center made a speech, during which he first reviewed the historical links between Shanghai Jiaotong University and SUES and then mentioned that since 2010, the former had been leading the cooperation with the latter. He spoke favorably of the approval of the Center construction, expressing his gratitude to Shanghai Education Committee for its generous support of the Center. He emphasized that Shanghai’s advantages in the combination and application of high strength laser processing and intelligent robots offer a good opportunity to revive the metropolis’s industrial glory. It was his sincere wish that the establishment and the development of the Center would ultimately make greater contributions to Shanghai’s industry.
