The three innovation projects of college students from SUES youth league won prizes in the award ceremony for the 12th “Chen Jiageng Cup” youth invention held on May 23. Since no competitor won the first prize for college students in this Cup, “Crane rail automatic monitoring instrument” led by Liu Wei from school of mechanical engineering, which won the second prize, becomes the highest one in this competition, and “A table tennis collecting device” led by Sun Chen received the third prize, and “High precision photoelectric sensor auto monitoring system” led by Cheng Jiazhong obtained the prize for encouragement. Yu Tao and Wang Zhikang, vice chairmen of Shanghai Scientific Association awarded the prize certificates to SUES winners. Since project solicitation in December, 2013, scientific center of youth league has organized and mobilized all talented and creative talents in SUES to participate. Thanks to the active response from all schools of SUES, a total of 11 qualified works were singled out, the highest number of submitted works for this event over the recent years. Before question-answering session, youth league and all project team instructors devoted all their energy to help the team members to enhance their capabilities. “Crane rail automatic monitoring instrument” led by Liu Wei is able to accurately predict the wear of the rail, the practicability and feasibility of which were sufficiently verified after three lab tests in different environments and locations, and which won the recognition from the judges and thus received the highest prize. Founded in May, 1986, “Chen Jiageng Cup” youth invention prize was sponsored by Prof. Yang Zhenning, the Nobel Prize winner and honorary consultant to Chen Jiageng Foundation. Co-sponsored by Chen Jiageng Foundation in Singapore and Shanghai Science Association, “Chen Jiageng Cup” youth invention prize (Shanghai), which has been held in Shanghai since 2003, is mainly targeted at college students and high school students, encouraging them to apply their acquired knowledge and skills to bold innovation and creative thinking, and thus has made enormous contributions to promoting scientific innovation activities among young people in Shanghai and building a city of innovation. According to the organizing committee, a total of 401 works have been received for this event, covering 15 universities and 77 high schools and elementary schools. In the end, there were 16 second prizes (including college students and high school students) and 19 third prizes (including college students and high school students).
