At the beginning of new year, everything is new. At 7 o’clock on the morning of January 1, 120 young volunteers of SUES were dressed up to participate in an activity of Shanghai new year brand organized by Songjiang District Government--volunteer service for new year’s climbing of She Hill. For eight consecutive years, our school is the only university volunteer service team to take this project. The volunteers’ “enthusiasm, sincerity, youth, honesty” have become contents of consideration of many social institutions, organizations, and groups to select volunteers.
The volunteers were from the Youth League Committee, School of Material Engineering, School of Air Transportation / Flying, School of Urban Rail Transportation, and Social Science College, and they were responsible for the work of reporting, guiding, recording, counseling and sending out souvenirs. The volunteer center of Youth League gave special training many times of appearance, etiquette and emergency. In addition, the Youth League also provided hot breakfast for volunteers. The warming-up exercise before starting off prevented the students from getting hurt in cold winter because of violent activities. From the registration point at the starting point to starting line to the top of the hill and service point at the foot, the whole 3 kilometers of climbing route could be seen our volunteers serving warmly. Wearing the same certificates and red hats of SUES volunteers , they had become a brilliant scenery of She Hill in the new year.
This year because of designing the procedures of handing out souvenirs and making blessings, large crowds would appear at the top and the starting and finishing points were also changed. The race was lengthened. These changes were undoubtedly a kind of challenge. Before the competition started, it was the time for volunteers to present themselves. They patiently guided the contestants to sign their names and got the coupons. Facing contestants of different ages and with different questions, they were always smiling, and cheering up the contestants. At about 10:15, the first group of climbing contestants reached the volunteer service station at the top of the hill. Shortly after, the trees hanging with red blessing ribbons harmonized with the red hats of SUES volunteers, a hot and blissful scene of new year.
As the signal activity of new year in Shanghai, there were around 6000 contestants registering for the climbing competition, and also attracted thousands of tourists to climb the hill. For eight years, Songjiang Commercial and Travel Committee and Sports Bureau actively connected with our school in volunteer service project of She hill climbing, which has become a name card for good volunteer work of our school. The good and passionate volunteer service was unanimously praised by the climbing project committee. Apart from volunteer service, many cadres of the Youth League led some low-grade students from other places to climb the hill in the new year as tourists in order to learn about Songjiang culture and feel the new year’s charm of Shanghai. The red hats of volunteers have become a patch of splendid red, warming the She hill in winter and presenting the youth spirit of SUES volunteers.
