SUES-HTW Chur Joint Education program:A new chapter of the vocational-education internationalization

During the 14-year international programs’ running, Shanghai University of Engineering Science has enhanced the exchanges with many universities and been exploring the chances to absorb advanced educational resources. Shanghai University of Engineering Science has been committed to internationally 10 cooperative education programs, and succeeded in running cooperative programs with such advanced countries as the United States, France, Korea and so on. With a 3-year preparation, the university saw another fruit of cooperation, Sino-Swiss Joint Education program International Business (Tourism and Business Management) with HTW Chur, Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft University of Applied Sciences.

On May 19th, the Launching Ceremony of Sino- Swiss Joint Education program International Business (Tourism and Business Management) was held in the Information Center of Hongkou Campus. About 50 distinguished guests participate in the ceremony, including Mr. Alexander Hoffet- the Consul General of Consulate General of Switzerland in Shanghai, Pascal Marmier - the Swiss Vice-Consul General and CEO of Swissnex China, Mr. Li Guohua - Deputy Governor of the Hongkou District People’s Government Shanghai Municipality, President of SUES Xia Jianguo, President and Vice-Chancellor of HTW Chur Jürg Kessler, Chairman of CEDES Holding AG , Mr. Beat De Coi, General Manager Jason Zheng, Director of Training Section Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration Mrs. Wang Hongping, Deputy Director of International Office Shanghai Municipal Education Commission Zhou Qinjian, Sino-Swiss faculty representatives, representatives from Swiss Air and Swiss Luzern Tourism etc., and several media reporters. The ceremony was hosted by Prof. ChengWeiming of SUES.

The Nameplate of Sino-Swiss Joint Education Program was unveiled by Mr. Alexander Hoffet, the Swiss Consul General and Pro. Xia Jianguo, the President of SUES.   The University-Enterprise Strategic Cooperation Framework Agreements were signed by Prof. Liu Qizhong, Dean of Advanced Vocational Technical School of SUES, and Christine, General Manager of China Zone, Swiss International Air Lines Ltd. and Alex, Chief Representative, Shanghai Representative Office of Lucerne Tourism respectively. The university-enterprise cooperation would be devoted to build a multi-platform for the high-level tourism talents training.

 

Speeches were delivered by several sides, including Mr. Alexander Hoffet - the Consul General of Consulate General of Switzerland in Shanghai, Mr. Li Guohua - Deputy Governor of the Hongkou District People’s Government Shanghai Municipality, President of SUES Xia Jianguo, President and Vice-Chancellor of HTW Chur Jürg Kessler, Chairman of CEDES Holding AGMr. Beat De Coi, Deputy Director of International Office, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission Zhou Qinjian. All sent warm congratulations on the program, and expressed the sincere wishes for its successful development in the bright future. 

The program of International Business (Tourism and Business Management) introduces the advanced philosophy of Swiss tourism management, comprehensively deepens the teaching reform of International Business Specialty, enhances the level of teaching, and helps achieve the goal of "internationalization of vocational education". This program, whose main courses’ teaching is undertaken by both Swiss and Chinese lecturers, adopts the Swiss standard of learning, and is committed to cultivating students in such a way as to equip them with a good command of English and the ability of cross-cultural communication, thus offering them a good prospect for employment.

The objective of this program is to cultivate inter-disciplinary business professionals, up to international standards, who are to be working in the tertiary industry, especially in modern service industry. Graduates under this program will be qualified to work in such fields as foreign business, foreign tourism management and high-end hotel services and management, international cruise service and management and so on.

One third of the specialized modules in this joint program will be taught by lecturers who are coming to China from HTW Chur. The curriculum of students’ three-year study in China is set based on negotiations between the two sides. SUES is in charge of recruiting students, who will be awarded a College Diploma issued by SUES and a Course Certificate issued by HTW Chur.

Some students, who pass the examinations and meet the requirements of HTW Chur, will be qualified to spend 1 year furthering their study in Switzerland. Those who get the required credits will be awarded MSc in Tourism issued by HTW Chur. The first 35 students for this program will be admitted in September 2015.

Switzerland has the world's leading vocational education system, whose tourism competitiveness ranks number one globally. Chur, as HTW’s location, is the capital city of Canton of Grisons which is the largest holiday resort in Switzerland. Chur enjoys a high reputation in tourism, and provides the most convenient environment for the teaching and scientific research of tourism management.  Founded in 1963, HTW Chur, also as Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft University of Applied Sciences, is a public educational institute recognized by Swiss Federal Council, and is the only campus in Switzerland that sets the interaction courses between the disciplines of science and technology and economics, and also the only university in eastern Switzerland that provides an undergraduate program of tourism management taught in English. Master Courses and the MS degree qualification are also provided by the Tourism Management Major in HTW Chur.
