Bringing the Classroom to Shanghai Fashion Week: SUES Students Put Their Skills to the Test

From October 8 to 16, Shanghai Fashion Week SS2027 took place as scheduled. As a key platform for new fashion collections, creative exchange and industry insights in China, this season’s Fashion Week brought together emerging designers and leading brands from China and abroad to showcase cutting-edge fashion concepts. SUES Students majoring in Fashion Performance at School of Textiles and Fashion took an active part in this major industry event, extending their academic training from the classroom to the front lines of the fashion industry and gaining valuable hands-on experience in industry-education integration.

The fashion shows served not only as a platform for showcasing creative designs but also as a practical testing ground for students' professional skills. Several students from the Class of 2025, including Chen Wei, Ye Xinya, Zhong Yi, Zhao Zhendong and Hu Rui, walked the runway for various brands, including XIRU; GIOIA PAN; UNCODED; SEVENLONG; and YOUTOPIA. Applying the runway techniques, catwalk styles and sense of musical rhythm developed through their coursework to professional fashion shows, the students demonstrated their skills and professional competence on the runway, effectively bridging the gap between classroom training standards and industry practice.

In addition to appearing on the runway as models, some students took on behind-the-scenes roles, contributing to the overall coordination and operation of fashion shows. Mi Lin and Sun Zihan, both from the Class of 2024, served as assistant show directors and participated throughout the preparation, coordination and operational arrangements for shows by several brands, including YIRANTIAN, YANGKEHAN, JRUREMINDS, AVVENN, MARKGONG and SANRIO. Moving from being performers managed on the runway to members of the backstage coordination team, the two students carried out their responsibilities with professionalism and attention to detail, gaining hands-on experience across the entire process of fashion show production and demonstrating the comprehensive capabilities expected of versatile fashion performance professionals.

The participation of SUES students from School of Textiles and Fashion in Shanghai Fashion Week represents not only a vivid demonstration of the achievements of the Fashion Performance program’s day-to-day teaching, but also an important step in SUES’ efforts to respond to the demand for high-quality development in Shanghai’s fashion and consumer goods industries and deepen reform in practice-oriented talent development.
