We will learn about welding design & fabrication based on the weldability analysis, factors affecting weldability in fabrication / for service, weldability of materials, weldability tests for fabrication/ service and the fundamental theorems of weldability, which give the connections between design, test, fabrication and welding and joining of materials. We will begin by introducing the notion of cracks and timeline of the welding and joining of materials, which is essential to defining weldability and welding fabrication. By the end of the semester students should know precise definitions of these objects and know how to design & fabrication most of steel welded structure, aluminum welded structure (used in automobile manufacturing, shipbuilding industry etc.) based on weldability. We will also give an indication of the sorts of problems that can be solved using welding fundamental theorems proposed above and discuss the welding processes, the properties of materials related to weldability and effect of base metal factor and welding procedure factors on the weldability in fabrication/for service.
