The 2026 Sports Meet of SUES kicked off on 20 May at the gymnasium on Songjiang Campus. He Li, Secretary of the CPC SUES Committee, declared the event open. Xu Yang, Vice President of SUES, presided over the opening ceremony and delivered an opening address. Vice Presidents Wang Yansong and Xia Chunming also attended the event. Representatives from Songjiang District Education Bureau and Sports Bureau, delegates from fellow universities including Dong Hua University and Shanghai International Studies University, as well as heads of university departments, faculty members and student representatives joined the ceremony.

At 8:30, the stirring March of the Athletes echoed throughout the gymnasium as the national flag and university flag processions led the parade. Student and staff athlete delegations from each school and college entered in sequence, dressed in distinctive costumes and full of energy. One after another, the delegations took to the floor before the rostrum with lively one-minute showcases, combining creative performances and spirited slogans to capture the energy and confidence of SUES students.

The audience rose for the national anthem. In his opening remarks, Xu Yang, on behalf of SUES and the organizing committee, welcomed the guests and participating teachers and students, and expressed gratitude to all staff members involved in the event. He noted that SUES has actively implemented the Ministry of Education’s initiative to enhance students’ physical fitness, promoting stronger foundations through sport and fostering holistic education through physical activity. Campus sports culture, he said, continued to thrive. He encouraged faculty members and students to embrace sport as part of everyday life, drawing strength, resilience and teamwork from athletic pursuits as they strive towards their goals.
Wang Wenjia from School of Textiles and Fashion, captain of China’s national university cycling team, delivered the athletes’ oath on behalf of all competitors. Liu Nuo from the Department of Physical Education, a national-level athletics referee, took the oath on behalf of all referees.

The opening ceremony featured a lively showcase of performances celebrating sportsmanship and cultural heritage at SUES. A creative blend of dragon dance and Wuqinxi Martial Art highlighted the charm of traditional Chinese sports, while dynamic rope-skipping, energetic dance routines and a graceful Baduanjin Martial Art performance added elegance and vitality to the stage. The atmosphere reached a climax with an upbeat aerobics show.

Following the ceremony, athletes from across the university competed in a wide range of events. More than a celebration of sporting achievement, this year’s Sports Meet reflected the unity, energy and shared ambition of the SUES community. The university will continue to advance sports education and holistic student development as it moves towards its goal of becoming a world-class application-oriented university with distinctive industrial strengths.
