From November 20th to 23rd, the finals of the 2020 China Railway Industry Cup, the 9th National College Student Mechanical Innovation Design Competition fell on the Xipu campus of Southwest Jiaotong University. The project intelligent table and chair integration system was instructed by two teachers, Zhang Chunyan and Jian Qiwei, of the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering of SUES. Five students won the national first prize after four rounds of competition, and they are Qian Chenhao, Li Hao, Chen Haoran, Ye Feifan, and Lu Ying. This award is another breakthrough after SUES won the first prize for the first time in the 8th National College Student Mechanical Innovation Design Competition in 2018.

The theme of this competition is Smart Home and Happy Family. The contest topics are divided into two categories: Elderly Care for the Elderly and Smart Home. It attracted more than 100,000 students from 678 colleges and universities from 30 provinces and autonomous regions across the country. There were 4,719 works related to the topic, and 435 works participated in the preliminary evaluation, and 181 works were selected for the national finals. A total of 143 first prizes and 238 second prizes were selected in the finals. The first prizes only accounted for 3% of the relevant works.
Although the number of participants has declined this year due to the epidemic, the School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering has achieved fruitful results in RoboMaster Mecha Masters, Mathematical Modeling, Mechanical Innovation City-level Competition, and 3D Digital Innovation Design Competition. Especially in this year's Mathematical Modeling Contest, the award rate and award level are the highest in SUES.
