Professor Ye Zhiming Analyzed How to Deepen University’s Educational and Teaching Reform

On the afternoon of March 4, the school’s party committee central group held an expanded session in Room B301 of Administrative Building. The session invited Professor Ye Zhiming, Vice President of Shanghai University, to give a theme report on “Exploring the outlet to deepening education and teaching reform in universities”. More than 230 people including the school leaders, middle-level cadres, professors, leaders of some teaching groups,and instructors attended the session. Teng Jianyong, Secretary of the school’s Party Committee, presided the session.

                                  

Professor Ye Zhiming elucidated his thoughts and practical exploration on the current way to deepen educational and teaching reform from three aspects. First he pointed out the reason of reform in relation to the university’s current situation and future. He maintained that at present the universities have not established in a macroscopic way a talent development mode, which coincides with innovative talents, made deviations in implementing education and teaching in a middlescopic way, failed to motivate the teachers and students in teaching and learning in microscopic aspect. Therefore, the present university education and teaching faces a series of problems, which ought to be reformed. After that, Professor Ye analyzed the situation faced by the university education and teaching reform. He started with the complete deep reform presented by the 18 session of the 3 plenary session of the Central Committee and pointed out that the present reform, including educational reform, has entered into deep waters and student source crisis is urging the reform. In his analysis, he introduced all sorts of reform measures promoted by Shanghai University in educational and teaching reform in recent years, elucidated that only reform can promote the school’s development and increase educational and teaching quality. At last, Professor Ye talked about his thoughts over the practical exploration of reform and the way out. Concerning the theme “what kind of talents and how to develop”, he pointed out that teaching creativity should be left to the teachers, learning initiative should be returned to students, and the universities must in the course of education establish scientific thought and thinking method, choose correct educational ways and explore correct teaching system.

Professor Ye introduced lots of interesting stories and examples in the report, making the audience interested and the reform topic easy to understand. At the end of the report, Professor Ye had also an interaction with the teachers and students present and answered their questions. The report was generally praised by the audience.

In conclusion, Secretary Teng Jianyong pointed out that this autumn our school was going to promote credit system reform. In order to liberate thoughts and promote our school’s educational and teaching reform, the school will open up an expansive discussion on how to deepen educational and teaching reform. Professor Ye’s wonderful report added to the atmosphere for the forthcoming discussion and provided beneficial thought guide and experience borrowing.
