Research Fields

Institute of Translation and Intercultural Studies of SUES is a research organization approved by SUES in March 2014. Based on the translation theory research, the institute, which consists of senior professors and academic backbone youth in (applied) Foreign Language Teaching Department, including 1 professor and 2 vice-professors and 1 Ph.D. candidate, highlights the research on the theory and practice of translation studies and translation teaching.

The research focuses on literary translation, cultural translation, classic translation, translation history, pragmatic translation, translation criticism, translation teaching and translation teaching material. The institute effectively integrates the teaching and scientific research of translation in Foreign Language Teaching Department to lay a solid foundation for the establishment of superior subjects.

The Institute has established long-term relations with universities, publishers and research institutions at home and abroad. Several teachers have been visiting scholars and received relevant trainings in some well-known universities, such as the University of Manchester, University of British Columbia, Shanghai International Studies University, and East China Normal University.

The Institute has achieved fruitful results: it has accessed to one project supported by Humanities and Social Sciences Youth Foundation of Ministry of Education, five projects by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission (including projects Supported by the Excellent Young Teachers Program), 7 projects sponsored by university and Municipal Education Department and 3 provincial and ministerial level projects. It has published more than 10 works, textbooks and translations, such as On Translation of Super IN Neologisms of Chinese press, A Practical Course book of Translation, EST Reading and Translation: A Course book, A Dictionary of Translation Studies in China, The Curse of the Mummy. It has published about 150 papers about translation theories and translation criticism on publications, such as Perspectives: Studies in Translatology, Foreign Language World, Chinese Translators Journal, Shanghai Journal of Translators, Chinese Science &Technology Translators Journal, Shangdong Foreign Language Teaching Journal, Translation as well as Minority Translators Journal, East Journal of Translation, Journal of Xi’an Foreign Languages University. It has awarded the first prize in the Translation Seminar of East China, one Grand Prizes of teaching achievements, and two prizes of academic works in SUES.

    Prof. Liu Xiaomin, director of this institute, vice dean of School of Fundamental Studies of SUES, member of Shanghai College English Teaching Steering Committee, member of Foreign Language Committee of Shanghai Education & Technology Association, has published 8 works and 20 papers on key Journals of Foreign Language and provincial-level Journals.
