Half of the summer vacation has passed, but the social practice activities are in full swing. The students from our university can be seen all over China.
This year we have 27 key university programs among which three teams of “Go to the countryside”--a program under which officials, doctors, scientist and college students go to the countryside to spread scientific and literacy knowledge and offer medical service to farmers—are Shanghai city key programs, and one team belongs the national key program. From July, all the teams from different departments and colleges started their journeys to Gansu, Jiangxi, Qinghai, Shaanxi and Yunnan. Under the leadership of the Party Secretary Zhou Jie of the College of Automotive and the university Youth League Secretary Zhu Bei, the team to YaoLing Hope Elementary School in Jingdezhen City in Jiangxi Province was singled out as the national key program and it’s also the 20th journey to the school. The team presented to the students there with computers, stereo equipment, sport equipment and other teaching equipment and bookshelves, books and stationery as well. Our students also opened some workshops like Creative Drawings, Calligraphy, Automotive Cultures, and Science Knowledge. They and the pupils there worked out the joint art performance, which resulted in a closer relationship with the elementary school.
The team from Fashion College initiated the program “Discovering Chuxiong Yi Embroidery Craftsmanship”. They visited the museum and looked for the embroidery girls and the mysterious craftsmanship on the top of the fingers.
The team from the College of Management Engineering came to Minqin County Wuwei City in Gansu Province and got to know the desertification there and took part in the desertification prevention and passed down the torch of protecting the ecology.
The team from College of Art and Design visited the ancient city Xi’an, and discussed the special work of Youth League with the people from the Youth League from XIDIAN University. In Shanghai, the footprints of our students can be found in the districts of Songjiang, Minhang,Baoshan, Pudong, Hongkou, Zhabei, Xuhui and Changning. All kinds of work of investigation and research, science promotion and voluntary work were carried out in communities, railway stations, subways, airport and enterprises.
The team from the School of Social Sciences did the investigation and research of community medical service. The students from Sino-Korean School of Multimedia taught the pupils to make hand-painted postcards and creative origami. The students from Sino-French Institute of Fashion Designer gave the company to the children from disabled families. The students from Advanced Vocational Technical College went to the communities to work in the neighborhood committee.
As the key Shanghai program of 2014, “Love Summer Care” underwent smoothly. Our three recipient elementary schools are from Qingpu District, like Fengxi Elementary School. Twenty-four volunteers worked 8 hours every day for 6 weeks continuously to provide free summer care to over 180 students. The volunteers not only took full use of the existing resources but also took advantage of their own hobbies and specialties to design rich and interesting courses based on the features of the young students’ psychology, like Creative Drawing, Pen-and-ink Calligraphy, which are very popular among the students. On August 1st, the vice Secretary of Shanghai Youth League, the vice president Sun Peilei, the vice Secretary of Qingpu CPC Committee paid a visit to the volunteers working there.
This year we have 13 programs which entered the sixth “Knowing and Doing Cup” competition finals for college students. Compared with last year, we did much better. The investigation and research section of the Youth League and the Graduate Union, based on the data and from different perspectives, analyzed and studied the phenomenon of college students becoming “cell phone clan”. The School of Social Sciences focused on the migrant workers children’s integration with local culture and life. The students from the College of Management Engineering studied the consumption of the cruise passengers by interviewing them on the spot. The students from the College of Mechanical Engineering designed the cutting compressor for the plastic beverage bottles under the tutorship of the teachers. They aimed to contribute to recycling the waste material.
College students’ summer social activities are an important part and platform for developing talents through practices and we have been attaching much importance to it. With the help and support of concerned departments and leaders, the Youth League planned and made the arrangements, and studied the needs of different departments and areas, and did something creative in the way of funds allocation, management system and policy support. The students were encouraged to be involved in the social activities to achieve the goal of “being educated, developing abilities and making contributions”.
