On January 9, the awards ceremony of 2014 National Undergraduates Mathematical Contest in Modeling was held on Xuhui Campus of East China University of Science and Technology. Our university won 7 second national prizes, 9 first Shanghai prizes, 2 second Shanghai prizes and 33Shanghai third prizes; the number of prizes won by our university ranks fifth among Shanghai universities that have participated in this contest. Moreover, our university won a third prize in “Shenzhen Cup” Mathematical Contest in Modeling of Shanghai Division and an outstanding organization award.
All universities and colleges in Shanghai, a total of 1,150 teams, participated in this Contest, among which 62 teams were from our university.
The university leadership, Office of Academic Affairs and various schools of our university attached great importance to the preparatory work of the mathematical contest in modeling. As early as in April 2014, our university held training seminars on mathematical contest in modeling and organized a preliminary test; each school of our university selected experienced mathematical modeling teachers to teach students about line of thoughts, problem-solving methods, verification skills, thesis writing and other knowledge on mathematical modeling.
Our university’s mathematical modeling activity has become one of the largest well-known brands of the university’s second classroom. This activity greatly enhances our students’ practical skills and innovative abilities, and enriches the campus culture. As an important platform for demonstrating students’ abilities to apply mathematical knowledge and make innovation and cultivating talents, the mathematical contest in modeling has created favorable conditions for cultivating students’ innovative abilities. It is expected that more students would benefit from the mathematical contest in modeling and create a better participating atmosphere of innovative practices through the contest.
