On the morning of May 30 morning, the fourth Shanghai College Students Mechanical Engineering Innovative Design Contest began on the stroke in the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. After a day of orderly and tight exhibition, demonstration, oral replies/defenses, assessment, good news came out in the afternoon: our university won two first prizes and three second prizes.
The “home-use outdoor clothes hanger based on photosensitive raindrop sensor” (guided by Teachers Zhang Chunyan and Zhang Liqiang) and the “new-type easy pull socket” (guided by Teachers Zhang Chunyan and He Tao) won the first prizes; the “multi-functional furniture design” (guided by Teachers Wu Minghui and Wu Jianmin), the “shelf of the transport bicycle with training wheel” (guided by Teachers Ma Qihua, Zhang Chunyan) and the “smart clothes hanger with auto weather-sensing functions” (guided by Teachers Wu Minghui and Zhou Yufeng) won the second prizes.
Shanghai College Students Mechanical Engineering Innovative Design Contest is sponsored by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and hosted by University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. The contest aims to further deepen the connotation of higher education and promote the training model and practical teaching reform for Shanghai higher education. The contest is mainly targeted to students majored in mechanical discipline so as to cultivate their consciousness of innovative design, capability of integrated design and team-work spirit. The contest also aims to strengthen students’ manual dexterity and engineering practical trainings, improve students’ mechanical design skills, fabrication skills and other practical skills based on actual needs through innovative thinking, attract and encourage mass students to actively participate into extracurricular science and technology activities and create conditions for outstanding talents.
Shanghai College Students Mechanical Engineering Innovative Design Contest has been held for four times since 2012; now it also becomes a qualification trial at the municipal/provincial level for the National Undergraduate Mechanical Design and Innovation Contest. Since 2008, our university has organized student teams to actively participate in the annual contest and has won numerous prizes. However, it is the first time that so many teams have participated in the contest and our university team have won so high prizes. The contest has attracted more than180 participating teams from 14 colleges and universities, including Shanghai Jiaotong University, East China University Of Science and Technology, Shanghai University, etc. Finally, 28 teams won the first prizes, 43 teams won the second prizes. 7 teams from our university have participated in the contest under the great support of the Office of Teaching Affairs and the organization of School of Mechanical Engineering.
It is particularly worth mentioning that the participating work “home-use outdoor clothes hanger based on photosensitive raindrop sensor” has attracted attentions of the judges, guests, players and spectators. They were amazed at the ingenious design, novelty and intelligentization. The smart clothes hanger can automatically extend, shrink and shelter clothes with changes in the weather (rain, sunny, windy, etc.); the manipulation may be made on site, or by means of remote control via mobile phone networking. Therefore, the smart hanger can solve the problems the drying and collection of clothes when no one is at home, so it serves as “perfect clothing steward”.
