On September 16th, the 47th WorldSkills Competition closed in Lyon, France. The Chinese delegation performed very well, winning a total of 36 gold medals, 9 silver medals, 4 bronze medals, and 8 merit awards across all 59 events. China ranked first in the gold medal table, overall medal table, and team total score. Shanghai, China, as the host city of the 48th WorldSkills Competition in 2026, solemnly received the flag of the WorldSkills Competition in 2026. Behind these honors lies the power of SUES.
Vice President Xia Chunming led a team to attend the 2024 WorldSkills Forum. As the highest-level international forum in the field of skills this year, the theme of the forum is Placing Vocational Skills Education and Training at the Top of the Global Development Agenda. Vice President Xia Chunming and Director of the WorldSkills Competition China (Shanghai) Research Center, Wang Di, participated in all reports and discussions of the forum, exchanged views with experts, scholars, business elites, and young skilled talents from various countries and regions. They introduced the achievements and future development directions of SUES in vocational skills education and training, actively exploring opportunities for future cooperation. Vice President Xia Chunming also expressed his regards to the faculty and students of SUES who participated in the competition in Lyon.
Professor Liu Xiang from School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering guided the Cloud Computing project, which once again won the gold medal, marking the first time China has successfully defended a title in the information technology category. Professor Liu Xiang is the head of China's technical expert group for the WorldSkills Cloud Computing project. At the 2022 WorldSkills Competition Special Competition, Professor Liu Xiang guided the team to win a gold medal.
In this competition, a total of 16 countries and regions participated in the competition, including China, South Korea, Japan, Germany, France, Canada and other information technology powers, making the competition even fiercer. Under the guidance of Professor Liu Xiang, Chinese players ranked first in all scoring modules, securing the gold medals firmly.
The WorldSkills Competition China (Shanghai) Research Center at SUES assisted the Shanghai Vocational Skills Appraisal Center in organizing the technical observation of the 47th WorldSkills Competition. In this competition, Shanghai sent a technical observation team of more than 60 venue managers to Lyon to observe and learn. The research center was responsible for technical guidance, daily supervision of the observers, communication with WorldSkills officials, and handling unexpected situations.
At the closing ceremony of the competition, Shanghai presented a wonderful cultural performance with the theme Skills Create a Better Future. Zhang Chencong, Zhang Hui, and Wei Wenjie, who are students from School of Textiles and Fashion, participated in the performance, captivating the audience and participants from various countries. It was an honor to represent Shanghai and China in such a world-class event and to show Chinese elements and Shanghai's charm on the international stage. We are very excited and proud! they said after the performance.
School of Higher Vocational Education sent two teachers, Li Houjia and Zheng Hao, to serve as technical observers for the two competitions of Additive Manufacturing and Industrial Control. They engaged deeply with experts and competitors from different countries and regions, learning about various technical details of the event preparations, actively assisting in the competition organization, and creating favorable conditions for future training and participation of SUES contestants.
Held every two years, the WorldSkills Competition is the highest-status, largest and most influential vocational skills competition in the world, representing the world's advanced level of vocational skills development. In 2026, the 48th WorldSkills Competition will be held in Shanghai and SUES is ready and full of anticipation.
