On October 25, WorldSkills Conference 2021 was held in Shanghai by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Worldskills Organization, in order to prepare for the 46th Worldskills, approved by the State Council. Zhang Jinan, China’s Minister of Human Resources and Social Security, Gong Zheng, the Mayor of Shanghai, Chris Humphries, President of WorldSkills and Yu Tao, President of SUES attended the meeting.

The theme of this conference is “The Road Ahead — Skills for a Resilient Future”. It focused on the impact of COVID-19 on green skills, and the solutions and opportunities. The conference consists of President’s symposia and three parallel seminars. Worldskills Research Center of SUES delivered a speech on the topic “Green Skills and Skills Sustainability”.

In the speech, it was pointed out that in recent years, China’s green economy transformation accelerated in an all-round way, especially the Chinese government’s commitment to achieve carbon peaks by the year of 2030 and carbon neutrality by the year of 2060, that shows the Chinese government’s determination to develop a green economy. Although COVID-19 had a negative impact on the transformation of the green economy in short term, it would have a positive impact in long term by guiding consumption and skill upgrades. For the green-skill development, enterprises should be stimulated to invest in green skills with the help of government policy guidance and public opinionpropaganda. China should encourage listed companies and large state-owned enterprises to actively participate in vocational education, and encourage vocational skills training institutions to connect with industries and enterprises, and shorten the process between industry demand and talent training.Collecting the efforts of whole society, a green-skill-cultivating system is to be formed to provide skilled talents for China's green economy transformation.
