Released by China Machinery Industry Federation (CMIF), the Notice on the Approval of the Ninth Batch of Machinery Industry Innovation Platform Construction Projects announces the approval of two innovation platforms applied by SUES’s School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering: a SUES first to win machinery key laboratory construction projects. The approval of the “Key Laboratory of Low Carbon Technology for Machinery Industrial Boilers” and the “Key Laboratory of Intelligent Manufacturing Technology for Large Complex Thin-walled Aviation Components in Machinery Industry” marks a major breakthrough in the construction of SUES’s scientific research and innovation platform and our leading position in the related technological fields.

The Key Laboratory of Low Carbon Technology for Machinery Industrial Boilers is headed by Professor Yan Zhenrong and it has Professor Li Guanghui and Senior Engineer Professor Zhou Yang of Shanghai Industrial Boiler Research Institute Co., LTD (SIBRI) as deputy directors. The construction of this key laboratory provides an opportunity for SUES to intensify its interdisciplinary research direction and establish a new mechanism of key technological collaboration and joint innovation on the basis of interdisciplinary complementarity. With the cooperation from SIBRI, a new platform will be built for the R&D and demonstration application of key technology, and a new model, featuring the joint effort of “industry-university-research” will be established for the cultivation of specialized talents in the fields of emission peak and carbon neutrality.

The Key Laboratory of Intelligent Manufacturing Technology for Large Complex Thin-walled Aviation Components in Machinery Industry is headed by Professor Liu Gang. The laboratory will strive to become a key technology research platform of in the field of intelligent manufacturing of large complex thin-walled components with leading technology, distinctive features, and industry-university-research collaborative innovation, to promote school-enterprise cooperation to form a number of core patented technologies with independent intellectual property rights, and to lead and support the R&D of high-end products and original innovation in the industry.

According to Professor Fang Yu, the Dean of School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, the approval of the two key laboratories is significant in four aspects: Firstly, it filled the gap of SUES lacking a key experimental innovation platform for the machinery industry; Secondly, it shows that School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering has achieved remarkable scientific research results in related disciplines; Thirdly, it marks another two outstanding results in the efforts for the authorization of a Mechanical Engineering Doctoral program; and finally, the School will take these two innovative platform construction projects as an opportunity to further integrate existing laboratory resources, intensify its disciplinary research directions, optimize the composition of its teaching staff, and build key laboratories to become an innovation platform that have a strong national influence and integrates the functions of basic research, key technology nurturing, personnel training and achievement promotion and demonstration.
