On December 6th, a delegation led by Professor Fumio Shimada, an authoritative figure in the international ceramics education community, a luminary in the Japanese ceramics field, Honorary Professor at Tokyo University of the Arts, and President of the International Society for Ceramic Art Education and Exchange (ISCAEE), visited SUES for academic exchange. SUES President Yu Tao warmly welcomed Professor Shimada, and the event was attended by Gu Yi, Dean of International Institute of Creative Design, and heads from Office of International Cooperation and Exchange.
President Yu Tao extended a warm welcome to Professor Shimada and his delegation, providing an overview of SUES’ development strategy and educational positioning. He emphasized SUES’ distinctive feature of integrating industry and education and expressed the hope for strengthened collaboration to explore new models for talent development.
Professor Fumio Shimada delivered a lecture titled “Ceramic Education by Fumio Shimada” to faculty and students of International Institute of Creative Design. During the lecture, he showcased the design and production process of Shimada ceramics, demonstrating the meticulous craftsmanship and passionate dedication to the field by a Japanese artist. Professor Shimada has devoted decades to the craft of high-temperature underglaze ceramics, excelling in various processes such as pottery shaping, decorative carving, colorant formulation, glaze preparation, and firing. The audience had the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of ceramics in terms of both artifacts and craftsmanship, as well as the cultural significance. Professor Shimada engaged in interactive exchanges with faculty and students, expressing his intention for future cooperation in major development and cultural exchanges in the field of ceramics.
